Who better to solve problems of civil unrest in a futuristic city than a mad scientist?
Presented by Queensland Museum and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), join us for a special presentation of the iconic silent sci-fi film Metropolis 1927 with a new live musical score performed on stage. Metropolis charts a tale of class warfare between capitalist factory owners and the exploited masses who toil amidst the machine halls. Wealthy businessman Joh Fredersen reigns over the city and hires mad inventor Rotwang to deploy his female robot to infiltrate the workers and destabilise their plans to revolt. Featuring jaw-dropping futuristic sets and Art Deco inspired design, the inventor’s laboratory complete with Tesla coils and new technologies set the tone for the characterisation of scientists and their research spaces throughout film history. A restored 35mm film print will be accompanied by a musician live on stage for this sci-fi extravaganza.
