Primary Students

Thursday Session Times:

  • 9:30am-11am Session 1: Primary Almost Full
  • 10:30am-12pm Session 2: Primary Almost Full

Sessions Include:

  • Sound of Science with Dr. Joel Gilmore: Science communicator Dr Joel Gilmore performs a lively presentation combining music and science. From vibration science using live musical instrument demonstrations, to sounds in nature and space, to why our brains love music so much, enjoy this scientific musical journey that demonstrates physics is more entertaining outside the lab.Pokemon: are they biologically possible? with Dr Gurion Ang: The weird and whimsical world of Pokémon™ is filled with colourful animated characters, many of which draw inspiration from animals and plants of the natural world. Through a comparison of anatomy and physiology, students will be challenged to identify the living representatives of certain Pokémon™, to determine if they are biologically possible.
  • Self-led activities including Street Science, Wonder of Science Flying Scientists, Meet Queensland Museum scientists and discover world-class research, and hands-on Museum conservation and collections experiences

Teachers are encouraged to book early for their pupils to participate in the Student Day.

Secondary Students

Thursday Session Time:

  • 12pm-2pm Session 3: Secondary FULLY BOOKED

Session Includes:

  • Toxic Tides: Bioaccumulation and Biomagnification Discussion with Dr Gurion Ang: As the global population grew, so did the development and production of insecticides for agriculture and forestry use. Explore how insect pests develop resistance to insecticides and the often overlooked non-target effects of insecticide use in the environment. We will focus on a case study of DDT use and its impact on the conservation of iconic raptorial species. We will discuss the delicate balance between growing our food and environmental protection, and if this can be done sustainability.
  • Self-led activities including Street Science, Wonder of Science Flying Scientists, Meet Queensland Museum scientists and discover world-class research, and hands-on Museum conservation and collections experiences

Friday Workshop: Dr. G Talks IA3

  • 10:00am-11:30am: Secondary FULLY BOOKED

Dr Gurion Ang will give year 11 and 12 students tips and tricks for their science Internal Assessment 3: Research Investigation, including how to find credible sources of scientific evidence, structuring a scientific narrative, and forming a relevant and specific research question from a research claim.

Self-Led Activities

Hands-on museum conservation and collections experiences

Find out more about the science behind caring for museum objects and specimens and see the Queensland Museum’s collections and conservation team at work on historic objects. Secondary students can delve into the ten agents of deterioration for collections, and everyone can get hands-on making an archival box for a specimen and composing a museum label for their take-home treasure.

Meet Queensland Museum’s Scientists

Discover world-class research with Queensland Museum’s Scientists and learn how museums make real-world impact with our WSFQ Science Passport! Set forth on a trail to understand how researchers name coral species new to science, how many corals there are on the Great Barrier Reef, and how DNA sequencing is being used to prevent silent extinctions. Explore our latest palaeontology research and find out how shipwrecks, and their stories, are being preserved for future generations. From palaeontology to evolutionary biology to maritime archaeology – our team has your questions answered!

Street Science: Making real science seriously fun, don’t miss the Street Science team present high-energy science to inspire the next generation of scientists. The fun is contagious, and our team love to get everyone of all ages involved (even the parents)! A blend of humour, exciting demonstrations and age-appropriate scientific explanations to create an interactive science experience that can be enjoyed by all ages!

Wonder of Science – Flying Scientist: Each scientist will have hands-on inquiry-based STEM activities for attendees to engage with and learn more about the exciting and cutting-edge research happening all over Queensland. 6 – 8 Scientists including Flying Scientists (early career researchers in a variety of STEM fields) and Young Science Ambassadors (PhD students from multiple universities) will run the activities. Have a burning science question? Want to know what it is like to work as a scientist? Want to know how to become a scientist? The Flying Scientists have the answers! The Flying Scientists Initiative is provided by Wonder of Science in collaboration with the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist. The scientists are early career researchers that travel to regional Queensland centres for community STEM events.
