2019 Festival Wrap Up

Throughout March and across six Queensland locations, over 200,000 attendees came and experienced all that was on offer at World Science Festival Brisbane 2019. From advancing medical science to the story of space, there was something for everyone in the curated program of performances, conversations, interactive activities and outdoor experiences.

The festival gathered 209 experts and cultural luminaries from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Lithuania, United Kingdom and United States.

Internationally renowned scientist and Chief Councillor of the Climate Council Tim Flannery presented the Scientia® Address. From six sold-out shows, PARTICLE/WAVE offered a unique insight into the discovery of gravitational waves, under the dome of the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.

The fate of the Great Barrier Reef was discussed in OUR JEWELLED SEAS.  World Science Festival co-founder Brian Greene and a panel of interdisciplinary experts navigated through the complex challenges of sending humans to the red planet in WE WILL BE MARTIANS. Twenty-first century intelligence attempted to tame age-old enemies in PANDEMICS AND EPIDEMICS, investigating the application of modern science to prevent, predict and meet the rising threat of infectious diseases worldwide.

INNOVATION BY DESIGN considered the rise of science-based entrepreneurship and the blurring lines between technology, engineering and fashion.  QPAC’s Concert Hall was filled for the Australian premiere of TIME AND THE CREATIVE COSMOS, taking audiences on a cosmic journey from the Big Bang to the end of time.

A plethora of activities, conversations and talks were had throughout March in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Townsville, Gladstone, Chinchilla and Ipswich. The full 2019 program can be found here. 

More than 7,100 students attended World Science Festival Brisbane 2019 as part of the school’s program including curated student events demonstrating how science, technology, engineering and maths are used to solve real-world problems.
