Australian Cinémathèque, GOMA: ‘All in the Mind’ spotlights films that consider our desire to understand how our mind works.
Nine-year-old Benni is so out of control her mother is afraid to have her at home. Benni, desperate to be with her family, hops from one foster placement to the next and is dubbed a ‘system crasher’ – someone who cannot be accommodated in the usual child protection process. A visceral yet moving film anchored by a breathtaking performance from Helena Zengel as the wild and uncontrollable Benni, System Crasher is nuanced depiction of mental ill-health. Inspired by the writer-director Nora Fingscheidt’s own angry tendencies in childhood, System Crasher examines the environmental and emotional influences that can shape violent and dangerous behaviour.
