Australian Cinémathèque, GOMA: ‘All in the Mind’ spotlights films that consider our desire to understand how our mind works.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest touches on our fears about mental institutions and the misuse of power. Jack Nicholson, in a career-defining role, stars as Randle McMurphy, a prisoner who fakes mental illness so he can be transferred to a psychiatric hospital. He hopes the transfer will result in an early release from jail. His cheeky, boundary-pushing manner comes up hard against the institution’s strict structure – mostly in the form of a battle of wills with Nurse Ratched who takes a dislike to McMurphy and has electroshock therapy in her arsenal of punishment. Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Actor for Jack Nicholson and Best Supporting Actor for Louise Fletcher as the chilling Nurse Ratched.
