Australian Cinémathèque, GOMA: ‘All in the Mind’ spotlights films that consider our desire to understand how our mind works.
Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel unfolds as a delirious road trip across the Nevada desert to the hotels of Las Vegas. Johnny Depp plays journalist Raoul Duke (a stand-in character for Thompson) accompanied by his attorney Dr Gonzo (Benicio del Toro). What begins as a journalistic assignment for Duke to cover a motorcycle race is a fevered experimentation with the creative and mind expanding capabilities of psychoactive drugs.
