Shipwrecks are fascinating sites to explore with the aid of a SCUBA tank. They are often both underwater museums and brimming with new life as the ocean slowly claims them. In 1887, the Scottish Prince, a three-masted, iron hulled sailing ship, was transporting people and cargo from Glasgow to Brisbane. But she never quite made it, hitting a sandbank on the southern end of Stradbroke Island.
Today, the Scottish Prince is an underwater museum, and spectacular dive site. Join Queensland Museum’s Maritime Archaeologist, Dr Maddy McAllister on a dive to explore and learn about the shipwreck and wonder at the colourful underwater habitat it has since become. Erika Gress joins the dive to discuss the biodiversity of shipwrecks.
Attendees will meet at 6:30am at OzDive Gold Coast for a 7:00am safety and dive briefing. The group will head out for two offshore boat dives to the Scottish Prince Shipwreck where they will learn more about Maddie’s maritime archaeology expertise and Erika’s research on black corals. The boat will return to the meeting point at approximately 11:30am. Attendees will share their experience over a lunch BBQ. Attendees must be an Open Water Certified Diver. Free parking is provided at OzDive.
