Australian Cinémathèque, GOMA: ‘All in the Mind’ spotlights films that consider our desire to understand how our mind works.
A warmly humanist film starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, Awakenings is based on the renowned neurologist Oliver Sack’s memoir. In 1969, a young Dr Oliver Sacks began work with a group of patients who had contracted sleeping-sickness. Frozen in a catatonic state for decades, Sacks applied a completely different approach to treatment trialling the experimental drug L-dopa that miraculously offered the chance for them to awaken.
