Espen Knutsen

Espen Knutsen is the Senior Curator of Palaeontology at the Museum of Tropical Queensland (Queensland Museum Network) and holds a joint appointment with the James Cook University in Townsville, QLD. He is a vertebrate palaeontologist, and over the past 12 years he has conducted fieldwork and excavations in Australia, the Arctic, The Netherlands and USA. He has described five new species of Jurassic marine reptiles, and was part of an international multidisciplinary research team studying a newly discovered Jurassic marine ecosystem from the high-arctic archipelago of Svalbard, as featured in two TV documentaries – “Predator X” (History Channel/BBC) and “Death of a Sea Monster” (National Geographic). Now stationed in Far North Queensland, Espen is focussing his research on the prehistoric vertebrate faunas of ancient Queensland. This will include the collection of new material to be housed at the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Townsville.
