Dr Andrew Pask is an Associate Professor, Reader and ARC Future Fellow in the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne. Associate Professor Pask’s lab sequenced the genome of the extinct thylacine and is using this data to understand more about the biology of this unique marsupial predator.
Dr Sara Howden is a Senior Research Officer and Director of the Gene Editing Core Facility at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. Dr Howden’s research combines the latest in gene editing technology with kidney regeneration using stem cells to correct the gene mutations causing kidney disease.
Dr Jess Melbourne-Thomas is a Research Scientist with the Australian Antarctic Division and a Project Leader with the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre. In her work, she uses mathematical models of marine ecosystems to understand how these systems function and how they might respond to climate change and other human activities. Jess was named Tasmania’s Young Tall Poppy of the Year in 2015 for her excellence in research, science communication and policy engagement, and was one of 30 Australian Superstars of STEM in 2017. She cofounded the Homeward Bound Program for women in science and leadership, which sent the largest ever all-female voyage to Antarctica and was a finalist in the Women’s Agenda leadership awards for 2017.
Dr Ken Dutton-Regester is a Research officer at QIMR Berghofer. He identifies the genetic causes underlying the growth and development of melanoma to inform or improve existing treatment strategies. In conjunction with collaborators, Dr Dutton-Regester’s research has helped to identify new drug targets and to resolve some of the previously unknown ways in which metastatic melanoma becomes resistant to drugs.
